What Is Number Portability? Simple Explanation

Number portability is your right to keep your existing phone number when you switch carriers or providers. Also called Local Number Portability (LNP), it means your number belongs to you, not to the company that originally issued it — so changing providers does not mean changing your number.

How porting works

Switching a number to a new provider is called porting. The process is straightforward:

  1. You sign up with the new provider and submit a port request, usually with a recent bill and account details from your current carrier.
  2. The two carriers coordinate to transfer the number through the shared porting system.
  3. Once it completes, calls and texts to that number ring on your new service.

Your number’s underlying NPA-NXX routing is updated so the network knows where to send calls — but to everyone calling you, nothing changes.

How long it takes and what it costs

Most ports complete in about 2–5 business days, and many providers (including DialPhone) port numbers for free. Your existing number keeps working the whole time, so there is no downtime — you only switch over once the port finalizes.

Types of portability

  • Wireline-to-VoIP: move a landline number onto a VoIP or virtual phone number system.
  • Carrier-to-carrier: move between two providers of the same type.
  • Mobile portability: move a cell number to a new wireless carrier.

Why it matters

Number portability protects your most valuable contact asset. A business can switch to a better or cheaper phone system without losing the number on its website, business cards, and customer records. In the U.S., portability is a regulated right, which keeps providers competitive. It also pairs naturally with DID numbers: you can port a whole block of business numbers at once. DialPhone ports existing numbers in any US area code onto its business phone system with zero downtime.
