What Is an Overlay Area Code? Simple Explanation

An overlay area code is a second (or third) area code assigned to the same geographic region as an existing code. Instead of carving the region into two smaller zones, the new code is layered on top — so two different area codes serve the same cities at the same time.

How an overlay works

When a region’s original area code starts running out of available phone numbers, regulators have two options: split the region into two areas (each with its own code), or overlay a new code across the whole existing area.

An overlay is now the preferred approach because it leaves every current number untouched. Existing subscribers keep their number exactly as-is; only newly assigned numbers get the new code. The one trade-off: because two codes share the same geography, everyone in the region must dial all 10 digits (area code + number) for every local call.

Overlay vs. split

In a split, the region is divided and half the subscribers must change their area code — disruptive and rare today. In an overlay, nobody renumbers; the region simply gains a new code for fresh numbers. Most overlays since the early 2000s use this model.

Why it matters for your business

A number in the overlay code is exactly as local as one in the original code — same city, same callers, same trust.
