Area code 614 — Columbus and Franklin County
Ohio’s 1947 code for the whole southeast quarter of the state, cut back in the late 1990s to Columbus and its suburbs. It is also one of the few area codes a city celebrates by name: Columbus has marked 614 Day every June 14 since 2015.
New numbers available in 614Area code 614 is Columbus, Ohio. It covers the city and the rest of Franklin County, plus the edges of Delaware, Fairfield and Union counties, so Dublin, Westerville, Hilliard, Grove City, Gahanna, Reynoldsburg and New Albany all carry it.
Since February 27, 2016 it has shared that ground with the 380 overlay. A new Columbus line can come from either code, and every local call takes ten digits.

How 614 came about
From a quarter of Ohio to one metro, then a second code laid over the top.
- 1947One of Ohio’s four original codesThe first national numbering plan splits Ohio four ways. 614 takes the southeastern quadrant: Columbus down to the Ohio River along the West Virginia line, and as far north as Stratton.
- 1997 to 1998740 takes everything outside the metroWith numbers running short, the rural and small-city territory is split off as 740. Where the line should fall was argued before the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio in a 1997 complaint case (97-547-TP-CSS). 614 kept Columbus, Franklin County and edge suburbs such as Dublin and Westerville.
- 2001An overlay is planned, then shelved380 is earmarked to overlay 614 in anticipation of exhaustion. The growth does not arrive as forecast, and number pooling, which hands out numbers in blocks of 1,000 instead of 10,000, stretches the supply for another fifteen years.
- January 30, 2016Ten digits for every local callFollowing a PUCO order of January 14, 2015, seven-digit local dialing ends across the 614 area. Existing numbers do not change; only the way they are dialed does.
- February 27, 2016380 goes liveThe first 380 numbers are assigned on the same streets as 614. Anyone requesting a new central Ohio line from this date can be given either code.
Which code should you choose?
Two codes cover Columbus identically. The third is the ring around them, which is a different place as far as callers are concerned.
| Code | Covers | How it reads |
|---|---|---|
| 614 | Columbus and Franklin County | The Columbus code, recognized locally on sight |
| 380 | The same territory as 614 | Same streets, newer, with more numbers left |
| 740 | Central and southeastern Ohio outside the metro | Newark, Lancaster, Athens: close to Columbus, but not Columbus |
For a business that wants to look like a Columbus business, 614 is the familiar choice and 380 is the practical one when a specific pattern matters. Both are equally local.
614 by the numbers
Counted from prefix assignment records on October 3, 2026. A prefix is the middle three digits of a number, and each one holds up to 10,000 lines.
| Measure | 614 | 380 |
|---|---|---|
| Prefixes assigned | 777 | 138 |
| Rate centers | 16 | 16 |
| Carrier codes holding numbers | 40 | 41 |
777 of the 800 combinations from 200 to 999 are already assigned in 614, which is why so many new central Ohio lines now start with 380. Both codes are spread over the same 16 rate centers, the local exchanges a number belongs to, from Columbus, Dublin and Westerville out to Plain City and West Jefferson.
What people get wrong about 614
Is 614 used for spam calls?
614 gets spoofed for the same reason any big-metro code does: a Columbus number looks local to everyone in central Ohio, so it gets answered. Caller ID is a field the calling system fills in, not proof of where a call started. Carriers check STIR/SHAKEN attestation, but an unexpected request for payment, a code or personal details should still be checked by calling back a number you already trust.

Where is area code 614?
Area code 614 is Columbus, Ohio. It covers Franklin County and the edges of Delaware, Fairfield and Union counties, including Dublin, Westerville, Hilliard, Grove City, Gahanna and Reynoldsburg.
What state is the 614 area code in?
Ohio. 614 is entirely within central Ohio and has been an Ohio code since the first numbering plan in 1947.
Is 614 a country code?
No. 614 is a US area code inside country code +1. Searches for a "614 country code" usually come from Australian mobile numbers, which start +61 4 when written internationally.
What is the difference between 614 and 380?
There is no geographic difference. 380 was laid over the entire 614 territory on February 27, 2016, so both codes serve the same streets. 614 is older and more recognized; 380 has far more unassigned numbers.
When did Columbus get the 380 area code?
The first 380 numbers were assigned on February 27, 2016, after a PUCO order of January 14, 2015. An overlay had first been planned in 2001 but was shelved when number pooling stretched the supply.
Do I need to dial 10 digits for local calls in Columbus?
Yes. Ten-digit dialing has been mandatory across 614 since January 30, 2016, because two codes now share the same area. Dial the area code plus the seven-digit number for every local call.
What time zone is the 614 area code in?
Eastern Time: UTC−5 in winter and UTC−4 during daylight saving time, like the rest of Ohio.
What is 614 Day?
A local celebration of Columbus held every June 14, the date written 6/14. It began in 2015 with a small gathering and has grown into a citywide day of events and local business promotions.
Are Newark and Lancaster in the 614 area code?
No. Newark, Lancaster, Athens and the rest of central and southeastern Ohio outside the Columbus metro use 740, which was split from 614 in the late 1990s.
Can I still get a 614 number?
Yes, but the pool is tight: 777 of 800 possible prefixes are assigned. If you want a specific pattern or a memorable ending, 380 covers identical ground with many more numbers free.
