816 area code — Kansas City, Missouri and north-western Missouri
One of the original 1947 codes, and the Missouri half of a metropolitan area that sits in two states. Kansas City’s downtown is in 816 and its western suburbs are in 913 — the boundary is the state line, not any feature of the city. Because the two codes answer to different states, they have never been overlaid on one another; when 816 finally needed relief, Missouri added its own overlay, 975, in October 2023.
New numbers available in 816Area code 816 covers Kansas City, Missouri and the north-western corner of the state: Independence, Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, Liberty, Gladstone, Raytown and St Joseph.
It is one half of a metro area divided by the Missouri–Kansas border. The other half, including Overland Park and Olathe, is 913.
Since October 2023 new lines on the Missouri side may also receive 975, the overlay that shares every street with 816.

How a 816 number is built
Every North American number has four parts. Knowing where the seams fall answers most of what people ask about 816.
The code and the exchange together are the NPA-NXX: what each group of digits means.

How 816 came about
One of the original eighty-six codes, reduced twice, and overlaid only in 2023.
- 1947Missouri is divided in twoMissouri receives two of the original eighty-six codes: 314 for the eastern half around St Louis, and 816 for the entire western half of the state.
- 1950The south-west separates417 is created for south-western Missouri, taking Springfield and Joplin. This is one of the earliest splits anywhere in the numbering plan — only three years after the codes were first assigned.
- 1997Rural northern Missouri separates660 takes the rural north and east of the remaining territory. What is left is the Kansas City metropolitan area on the Missouri side, plus the counties immediately around it.
- October 13, 2023975 is laid over 816After twenty-six years without relief — unusual for a metro of this size — 816 gets an overlay rather than a split. 975 covers exactly the same territory, so no existing number changes; new lines simply start to receive the new code.
Which code should you choose?
Kansas City is served by two codes, and which one you want depends on which state you are aiming at.
| Code | State | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| 816 | Missouri | Kansas City proper, Independence, Lee’s Summit, St Joseph |
| 975 | Missouri | The same ground as 816, as an overlay since October 2023 |
| 913 | Kansas | Overland Park, Olathe, Kansas City KS — the Johnson County suburbs |
| 660 | Missouri | Rural northern and central Missouri |
| 417 | Missouri | Springfield and the south-west |
816 is the code for the city that gives the metro its name and reads as Kansas City proper. 913 reads as the Johnson County suburbs. Locals hear the difference immediately; the two are not interchangeable.
What people get wrong about 816
Is 816 used for spam calls?
816 is spoofed as a plausible Midwestern metropolitan prefix, and the split metro gives fraudsters a particular angle: a caller can display 816 to someone in Kansas, or 913 to someone in Missouri, and either can look local depending on which side of the line the recipient lives. That only works because caller ID is a display field the originating system fills in — it is not evidence of where a call started, in either state. Calls impersonating utilities and county offices are common here, and county lines matter in a metro divided this way. If a caller claims to represent an agency, look up the agency yourself and ring the number it publishes.

Area code 816 FAQ
What area code is 816?
816 covers Kansas City, Missouri and north-western Missouri, including Independence, Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, Liberty, Gladstone, Raytown and St Joseph.
What is the difference between 816 and 913?
The state line. 816 is the Missouri side of the Kansas City metro, including downtown; 913 is the Kansas side, including Overland Park and Olathe. They are separate territories, not overlays of each other.
Is 816 Kansas City?
It is the Missouri half of it, which includes the downtown and the city the metro is named after. The Kansas half of the metro uses 913.
Is 816 one of the original area codes?
Yes. It was assigned in 1947 as one of the original eighty-six, covering the entire western half of Missouri at the time.
What happened to the rest of the original 816 territory?
It was reduced twice. 417 took the south-west, including Springfield and Joplin, in 1950, and 660 took the rural north and east in 1997.
Does 816 have an overlay area code?
Yes. 975 has overlaid the whole 816 territory since October 13, 2023, so a new Missouri-side Kansas City number may begin with either code. 913, on the Kansas side, is a separate territory rather than an overlay.
What time zone is the 816 area code in?
Central — UTC−6 in winter and UTC−5 under daylight saving. The 913 side of the metro is in the same zone, so the state line does not change the time.
Can I still get an 816 number?
Yes, though supply is thinner than it was: 816 needed the 975 overlay in 2023, and new lines are increasingly issued in 975. Both codes cover the same streets, so a 975 number is every bit as local.
Should my Kansas City business use 816 or 913?
It depends which half of the metro your customers are in. 816 reads as Kansas City proper and the Missouri side; 913 reads as the Johnson County suburbs. Locals distinguish between them, so pick the side you actually serve.
How do I get an 816 business number?
Search 816 for a Missouri-side Kansas City number — or 975, which covers the same ground — and set routing up before publishing it. If your customers are mainly in Overland Park or Olathe, 913 is the more natural fit.
Getting a 816 business number
816 numbers are still being issued, so a business anywhere can hold one and route it to wherever its team actually works — you do not need an address in Missouri.
