Five codes now cover the outer boroughs, and to a New Yorker they read differently even though they are the same place.

None is more local than another. If you want the number to say outer-borough New York without further thought, 718 is still the one — but availability is thinnest there, and 465 is where the free numbers are.

What people get wrong about 718

Marble Hill dials like the BronxMarble Hill is legally part of Manhattan but sits on the mainland, north of the Harlem River after the Harlem Ship Canal cut it off from the island. Its exchanges route through Bronx central offices, so it uses 718 and its overlays rather than Manhattan’s codes. It is the one place in the city where the borough on your mail and the code on your phone disagree.

You dial eleven digits to call across the streetBecause four codes overlay the same territory, local calls here need the area code — and on landlines, historically a leading 1 as well. Two neighbours on the same block can hold different area codes, which surprises people who assume the code narrows down where someone lives. Within the outer boroughs it narrows down almost nothing except roughly when the line was opened.

Is 718 used for spam calls?

718 is spoofed heavily, for the same reason any large-metro code is: a familiar local number gets answered far more often than an unfamiliar one. Fraudsters forge caller ID to display a 718 prefix so the call looks like a neighbour, a local business or a city office. Caller ID is a display field rather than proof of origin, so a 718 number on your screen does not establish that the call came from Brooklyn. Treat any unexpected request for payment or personal details as suspect — so verify anything unexpected through a number you already had, not one you were just given.

What is the difference between 718, 347, 929 and 465?

Nothing geographic — all four cover the same outer-borough territory. They differ only in when they arrived: 718 in 1984, 347 in 1999, 929 in 2011 and 465 in June 2026. A newer code is not less local, it is just newer.

Can I still get a 718 number?

Yes, though availability is thinner than on the newer overlays. If a specific pattern or a memorable ending matters more to you than the code itself, 465 has by far the deepest pool of unassigned numbers.

Why did Manhattan keep 212 and the boroughs get 718?

The 1984 split had to put the new code somewhere, and the smaller share of lines was in the outer boroughs at the time. It was widely resented as a demotion. Four decades on, 718 carries considerably more of the city’s population than 212 does.

Do I need to dial the area code for a local 718 call?
